A day At the Zoo and a Happy Birthday!

Friday the 13th was an action packed day full of wonder, fun memories, and happy laughter. At 9am, 13 kid’s ages 2-6, 5 nannies, and 8 volunteers packed into a 15-passenger van and took the Chiang Mai zoo by storm. Everyone was so excited and I am positive that the inside of that cramped van was the happiest place in all of Thailand that morning. The kids belted their favorite songs all the way there ("I've got the Joy" and "Father Abraham" are on the top of their list!) and enjoyed looking out the windows and soaking in the view.

The zoo was SO beautiful! It spirals up the mountain and is absolutely HUGE!  We were there a little over five hours, walked through quickly, and didn’t even see half of it! The Chiang Mai zoo has so much to offer as well! They have a “Snow Dome” which is an imitation of the North and South Pole complete with penguins and the occasional “snow storm.” Their aquarium has over 2,000 species of marine creatures and is home to South East Asia’s longest sea tunnel! They also have a “Panda House” and the opportunity to go into their habitat and take photos with the Pandas. The zoo also offers
zip-lining
, (from the top of the zoo to the bottom) elephant rides, a huge ATV course and a shooting range. It was amazing!

The kids LOVED the zoo! It had tons of animals and we were able get so close to them! I have never been so close to most of those animals in my whole life! The Zoo
doesn't have a rule against feeding the animals, so whenever they see people, they figure they are going to be fed. The coolest part was when we stopped to look at the hippos. They swam right up to the wall and opened their mouths for us to feed them. The few times I've seen a hippo they are always sleeping, so this was pretty cool. :) These hippos were swimming around really fast and came so close to us! The kids were so excited!

 The kids were a little scared of the giraffes, which was totally understandable seeing as how close we were to them. If you pay 10bhat for a huge stalk of bananas, they let you walk in and feed the giraffes! It was amazing to just walk in and have the giraffes all around you, bending down, and taking food right out of your hand!  We also got to pet a young elephant that was walking around the zoo and we got to feed some of the larger ones. The cutest animal of the day, by far, was the 15 day old baby elephant! It was SO tiny and CUTE!!!  None of the animals were shy around humans at all which was both intriguing and terrifying when you are with a bunch of small children. The kids also loved the Kids Zone and the koala exhibit.

At the end of the day, we got to ride the sky train that went around the whole zoo!  After the 45 minute ride, we ate a lunch of sticky rice and pork before we all piled into the van once again and headed home.  We all had a great time! On the way back to Agape everyone (expect Pon-Pon and I) feel asleep in the van. By the time we got back it was two hours past the kids nap time, so we led them to their naptime mats and left them to dream away the afternoon.

Friday was also a very special day because it was Brittney’s 20th birthday! After the evening shift, we went out to celebrate. For her birthday dinner, Brittney picked our favorite “Mexican” restaurant Salsa Kitchen. We meet up with the other ACU team and had a great time of fellowship and food. We surprised Brittney with two Thai music CD’s, which she was very excited about. :) After Salsa Kitchen, we went to one of our new favorite coffee houses, iBerry, and had some Oreo cheesecake.

Friday the 13th was a happy, happy day indeed!

Oh baby!

Last Monday, Rachel and I got to work with and spend the day with the “babies” (age 0-2) instead of with our usual age group. We took the 8am-5pm shift for two of the nannies who were taking care of a baby that is currently in the hospital. The nursery was short-handed, so Rachel and I gladly stepped in. We had a great day, holding, cuddling, singing to, and playing with these sweet bundles of joy! I have worked with the babies before, but only for a short period of time and never for the whole day. It was really fun to experience a change of pace and be able to get to know the babies even better. They are the CUTEST things ever! They are so happy, content and just so much fun! They loved it when we made “fish faces” and by the end of the day, one of the baby girls could make a PREFECT fish face! (Picture below)

 The greatest part of the day was when Rachel and I got to take the sweet little ones on a walk. The 2 year olds were using the strollers, so we each got to hold a baby as we walked. They loved looking around at everything outside and it was so cute to see their little eyes open wide as they looked at the world around them. By the time we got back to Agape, both of our babies had fallen asleep.  I love it when kids fall asleep in my arms! :) When we got back to the baby room, Rachel and I got to just sit there, holding the babies, watching them sleep. It was so peaceful (since the 2 year olds were still on their walk) and the floor where we sat was nice and cool.

As I looked in the beautiful face of the precious baby girl I was holding, I was so overcome with love her, and I stood in awe of God’s handy work. He knit her together in her mother’s womb and she is so fearfully and wonderfully made! My heart then began to ache for her because I thought about how much I want for her to have a mommy and daddy. I want her to get better, be healed, and live a long and happy life with her forever family so badly! As I looked into her sweet, innocent face, I remembered Jeremiah 29:11 which says: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” and I was encouraged by the fact that although this baby does not have a mommy or daddy here on earth, she has a Father in Heaven who loves her more than anything and has great plans for her life. He has great plans for each and every one of the kids here at Agape, no matter what challenges they face. These kids have so much faith and I know that God is going to honor that in them.

I hope YOU know how much Jesus loves you! I don’t know what your family situation was or is like, but I hope and pray that you know that you have a Father in Heaven who loves you like crazy and has great plans for you… It doesn’t matter how old you are! If you place your trust in Him, He will never leave you or forsake you! (Joshua 1:9) You are fearfully and wonderfully made! If you don’t know Jesus like that, can I suggest that you get to know Him? He died for YOU…He loves YOU… and He is waiting you for YOU…are you in?

Psalm 139:13-20
13 For You created my inmost being;
    You knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14 I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;Your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from You
    when I was made in the secret place,
    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
    How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
    they would outnumber the grains of sand —
    when I awake, I am still with You.

I finally got a little smile!

The girls!

In case you forgot...

...I wanted to remind you how precious these children are! :) I am blessed beyond words to be able to spend every single day with them. I could not be more in love with this place and each one of these children! Please keep them in your prayers and pray that God will send each of them a "forever family."
